In an attempt to regenerate fuel, flue gas desulfurization units are being installed on coal-fired boilers. These units, however, are being met with stiff opposition. At issue are the flue gas scrubbing systems, which are required. Companies would much rather use low sulfur coal and high premium fuel than risk the expense and unreliability of the sulfur dioxide scrubbing systems. Experience with scrubbing systems has not, however, been all bad. There have been reports stating that reliability has ranged from 50-90%. (1 photo)
