Title: High-resolution electron microscopy of LaPO/sub 4/ catalysts

Abstract

High-resolution electron microscopy of LaPO/sub 4/ catalysts, which are being developed to substitute for copper-promoted tricalcium phosphate as catalysts in the hydrolysis of aromatic chlorides (e.g., of chlorobenzene to cresol), showed that the most active catalysts had acicular crystallites of 50-100 A. minimum dimension, had a maximum dimension greater than this by factors of 4-10, and had the needle axis parallel to the crystallographic c axis. This morphology maximizes the surface exposure of hk0 planes, and exposes chains of alternating La and PO/sub 4/ ions. In the copper-promoted, water-containing active lanthanum phosphate, the copper and hydroxyl ions associated with the La and PO/sub 4/ chains are also accessible.
