This paper compares the photocatalytic activity of eleven porphyrins with variation of the pH of the electrolyte from 1 to 13 and stabilization of the remaining parameters of the system. Etioporphyrin II (EP), octaethylporphyrin (OEP), and tetra phenylporphyrin (TPP) were synthesized according to methods previously described. Pigment films were applied on platinum (Pt 99.99) polished substrates 11 mm in diameter in a vacuum of 10/sup -//sub 6/ torr by thermal sublimation. A table presents the averaged maximum and minimum values of the PP-pH, PC-pH and pH, at which they were reached for the complexes TPP and OEP. For the complexes EP and porphyrin with a cyclopentane ring the dependences are cited. The results obtained show that the photoactivity of the pigments obtained in the zone of working pH values of the electrolyte in which the parameters of pigmented electrodes are optimum for a given research or technical problem can be varied within wide limits by directed synthesis of porphyrins with definite donor-acceptor properties of the substituents in the ring of the molecule, modification of the ring structure itself, and selection of the metal contained in the complex.
