Complex-forming reactions between copper compounds and magnesium salts
Catalyst systems comprising two or more components sometime show greater promise in the oxidation of hydrocarbons. In the oxidation of ethylbenzene over a mixed catalyst based on a compound of a variable valence metal and magnesium naphthenate an increase in the selectivity of the process to hydroperoxide, and the appearance of a synergistic effect consisting of a nonadditive increase in the initial rate of buildup of 1-phenylethyl hydroperoxide are observed. The technique of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy has been used to demonstrate the existence of metellocomplexes of this type. The ESR spectrum of Cu(acac)/sub 2/ solutions consists of four lines of different intensity, analogous to a previously reported spectrum. Addition of MgNf/sub 2/ reduces the intensity of each of the four lines. Reaction of Cu(acac)/sub 2/ with MgNf/sub 2/ takes place with complete interexchange of ligands.
