Issues of soil-structure interaction and seismic input definition for nuclear power plants

Certain seismic criteria for the design of nuclear power plants in the United States suggested by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) are reviewed to evaluate their appropriateness. In addition, some assumptions used in computer codes which have been accepted in some licensing actions by the NRC are also evaluated. Evaluation methods included literature research and computational analysis. The criteria reviewed relate to the definition of seismic input to a nuclear power plant from its geologic and topographic environment and to soil-structure interaction as affected by site stratigraphy, strain input, and foundation embedment.
