Title: In-pile and unirradiated thermal conductivity of a single-fired ThO/sub 2/ + 10 wt. percent UO/sub 2/ (LWBR Development Program)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7010443

The in-pile and unirradiated thermal conductivities of a single-fired ThO/sub 2/ + 10 wt % UO/sub 2/ fuel were determined. The in-pile data were obtained at 300 < or = T < or = 900/sup 0/C to a burnup 2.6 x 10/sup 17/ fissions/cm/sup 3/. The test results showed that there is no apparent difference between the in-pile and unirradiated thermal conductivities. The conductivities of the single-fired material were compared with those of a double-fired ThO/sub 2/ + 10 w/o UO/sub 2/ of comparable density. The double-fired material had relatively small grains and small, uniformly distributed pores as compared with the large grains and ''necklace'' porosity of the single-fired fuel. The comparison of these data showed that the conductivities of the two fuels are significantly different; the curve for single-fired fuel achieves higher conductivity values than the double-fired fuel at temperatures greater than 1000/sup 0/C. This difference is attributed to the differences in structure between the two materials. (NSA 24: 25782)
