  1. Westinghouse Hanford Co., Richland, WA (United States)

The Savannah River Plant performed destructive examination of the materials of construction of one of its leaking single-shell tanks (SST) and concluded that the leaks in the steel liner were caused by nitrate-assisted stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Some Hanford Site SSTs also have leaked. However, no examinations have been performed to determine the cause of the leaks in the Hanford Site SSTs. Because of similarities in materials and operation of Savannah River Plant and Hanford Site, SSTs are suspected to have leaked because of nitrate-assisted SCC of the steel liner. This report compares, pointing out similarities and differences, in the designs, materials, fabrication methods, and operating environments at each sites to determine if it is reasonable to conclude that SCC has occurred in the Hanford Site SST liners.
