Fluid contamination is responsible for over 70% of the problems encountered in hydraulic and lubricating systems, but it can be prevented through proper control. The fundamentals of wear that cause decreased component life and mill equipment downtime, specific recommended fluid cleanliness levels, the means to reach them, and the economic benefits of reduced contamination are discussed. Ideal filter configuration and location for optimum filter performance are also discussed.
