Resin transfer molding (RTM) characteristics of low mold filling pressure and low mild clamping force have given the opportunity to explore alternative RTM mold materials and tool designs. Thermally activated resins used in RTM dictate the requirement for proper heat management and temperature control. This work evaluates the thermal characteristics of five different mold materials for resin transfer molding. These include 1018 steel, C95400 aluminum bronze, 6061 aluminum, C18200 chrome copper and aluminum filled, epoxy/fiberglass composite molds. The tools and mold cavities were instrumented with thermocouples such that temperature differences could be measured in the thickness and lengthwise directions. Molded composite specimens were evaluated for residual reactivity and tensile strength. Additionally, the influence of mold temperature control point was investigated.
