Solid-state transformations in Ni-Zr and Ni-Ti thin films
Solid-state reactions were examine in two metal-metal systems, Ni-Zr and Ni-Ti, including crystallization of homogeneous amorphous alloys and amorphization of compositionally modulated thin films. A systematic study of changes in temperature and activation energy of crystallization, from the peak position of a DSC trace, of amorphous sputter-deposited films was made. Amorphous-phase production by solid-state reaction of multilayered thin films was also investigated through changes in x-ray spectra upon annealing of the samples. While Ni-Zr exhibited amorphization, no definite evidence was found for amorphization in the Ni-Ti system. Instead, solid-state reaction leads to solid solution and production of intermetallic phases.
