Electricity markets in the 1990s: feast or famine
In a newly published book entitled ''Creating Abundance: America's Least-Cost Energy Strategy'', the authors of this article have documented the growing importance of energy productivity in the United States. In the buildings, industry, and transportation sectors, consumers have reacted to the higher energy prices following the Arab oil embargo by making cost-effective energy productivity investments that reduce their energy bills. This article highlights the implications of these trends for electric utilities, and suggests ways that utilities might benefit from managing such savings over time through the use of utility-sponsored conservation or cogeneration programs. The article concludes that such a strategy could benefit both utility ratepayers and stockholders. 5 references, 4 figures, 1 table.
