Abstract

States in /sup 154/Dy have been located up to I/sup ..pi../ = 48/sup +/ and their lifetimes measured. Marked structural changes occur along the yrast line with a transition from prolate to oblate shape, followed by an unexpected return to moderate collectivity at the highest spins. Structural changes with increasing energy above the yrast line are also observed.

Competition between rotational and aligned-particle high-spin excitations in /sup 153/ /sup 154/Dy

High-spin level structure of the transitional N = 87,88 /sup 153/ /sup 154/Dy nuclei have been studied using /sup 124/Sn(/sup 34/S,xn) reactions. In both nuclei the lower part of the level scheme includes decoupled rotational bands indicating prolate deformation in yrast structures between I = 17/2 and 41/2 in /sup 153/Dy and up to I = 30 in /sup 154/Dy. Above these collective bands the level structure becomes irregular, very similar to the aligned multiparticle structure in /sup 152/Dy. Our earlier works have shown that a pronounced reduction in the transition quadrupole moment from {approximately}200 to {approximately}1 W. u. occurs at spin 34+ (s-band) along the yrast line. The prolate collective rotational structure is then continued by the oblate single-particle configurations. This was explained by the band termination theory. To further study the property of {sup 154}Dy beyond this spin region, we performed an experiment using the reaction of {sup 122}Sn ({sup 36}S, 4n) {sup 154}Dy and the Gammasphere. Spectra of the E2 quasicontinuum {gamma} rays feeding different spin regions of the {sup 154}Dy yrast line have been extracted. These are compared with corresponding theoretical spectra obtained by numerical simulations based on temperature-dependent Hartree-Fock theory, with thermal shape fluctuations. In this manner, different regions of the spin-energy plane can be examined. The results support the predictions of a smeared-out phase transition at high spin above the yrast line. Nuclear structure studies in the A approx. 150 region by ..gamma..-ray spectroscopy following heavy ion induced reactions are summarized. Yrast states of N = 82 nuclei close to the proton drip line have been identified as rather pure (..pi..h/sub 11/2)/sup n/ excitations of seniority 2 and 3. The high-spin level structure of /sup 154/Dy has been determined through the /sup 124/Sn(/sup 34/S,4n..gamma..) reaction. Both the structure and the level lifetimes indicate a transition at I approx. 32 from collective to few-particle character, with possible shape changes from prolate-to-triaxial-to-oblate.

The high spin level structure of /sup 154/Dy has been determined through the (/sup 34/S,4n..gamma..) reaction. Lifetimes have been measured by use of the recoil-distance method. Both the level structure and lifetimes indicate a transition from collective to few-particle characteristics at high spin, possibly suggesting a changing shape from prolate through triaxial to oblate.
