Title: Charge-transfer strings in the extended Hubbard model for copper oxide superconductors

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. B: Condens. Matter; (United States)

Near the Cu/sup 2+/..-->..Cu/sup +/ valence instability, there are low-lying excitations in the extended Hubbard model for CuO/sub 2/ superconductors which consist of spatially extended, contiguous strings of Cu/sup +/-O/sup -/ pairs. Such strings can be electrically neutral or carry charges +e or -e. Results for the string band structure, their internal excitations, and possible attractive string-pairing interactions are presented. Important experimental implications are discussed.
