Title: Thermochemical treatment of tungsten and molybdenum, using a radiant energy source, in a flow of rarified atomic hydrogen

The authors describe a process and a system, utilizing solar process heat, for the thermochemical treatment and annealing of tungsten and molybdenum and the simultaneous catalytic dissociation of molecular hydrogen into atomic hydrogen. The thermal activation of the process by radiant solar heat was simulated by a xenon lamp. It was found that the combination of heating, radiant energy, and catalysis gave rise to an almost 100 percent conversion of the hydrogen. Surface and phase phenomena observed during the course of the reaction are reported.
