Influence of n-butylamine on conversion of cyclohexane to benzene and methylcyclopentane using Ni-Mo and Ni-W catalysts supported on silica-alumina
Hydroconversion is one of the most versatile of modern petroleum processes. This versatility has been achieved by the development of bi-functional catalysts. Bi-functional catalysts contain two types of active sites, i.e., metal sites and acid sites, which promote dehydrogenation/hydrogenation reactions and hydroisomerization /hydrocracking reactions, respectively. Choosing the best bi-functional catalysts for a specific objective requires achieving the appropriate balance between these two types of active sites. The kinetics of hydroconversion processes with respect to the variety of feedstock characteristics suggests interesting cases to study, i.e., hydroisomerization of paraffin wax from Sumatran light waxy residue to produce lubricating oil and fuel oil, using bi-functional catalysts with various acid supports, and determining the influence of catalysts acidity on the hydrocracking of Minas vacuum distillate into middle distillate. In order to obtain more information about bi-functional catalysts, the authors studied the activity of fresh and poisoned Ni-Mo/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-SiO/sub 2/ and Ni-W/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-SiO/sub 2/ catalysts for the conversion of cyclohexane into benzene and methylcyclopentane as a reaction model. The acidic activity of the catalysts was poisoned by the use of n-butylamine. Operating conditions were: pressure, 15 kg cm/sup 2/; H/sub 2//HC ratio 8 mole/mole, and temperature, from 370/sup 0/ to 400/sup 0/C. A continuous-flow, micro-catalytic activity (Catatest) unit was used in the experiments. Samples taken from gas and liquid products were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography.
