A method and materials are described for sealing highly porous zones in secondary recovery operations. This is accomplished by the injection into the porous zone of aqueous gels exhibiting high gel strength prepared from water and a mixture of (1) at least one cellulose ether, e.g., carboxymethyl cellulose, and (2) at least one polyacrylamide.
