Title: Alternative incandescent traffic signal lamps and systems for improved optical and energy efficiency. Final report, September 1983-February 1985

Abstract

A study was undertaken to determine methods of improving the optical efficiency of traffic signals to reduce power usage, while maintaining high safety standards. In-depth investigations were performed on the use of quartz-halogen lamps, low-voltage lamps, redesigned lenses, and nighttime signal dimming. All methods decreased power usage, although in some cases the increased initial cost did not justify their application. Very large efficiency gains were obtainable using redesigned lenses, the principles of which are described in the report.
