Title: Bonding and fracture of titanium-containing braze alloys to alumina

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6870475

Titanium-containing braze alloys were used to join both 94 and 99+% Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ compositions. Resulting tensile strengths of 11 to 16 KSI compared favorably with conventional Mo-Mn metallizing. Extensive optical, scanning, WDX, and Auger analyses reveal the migration of titanium to the ceramic surface during brazing where it reacts with the copper of the braze alloy and forms an intermetallic of the approximate composition Cu/sub x/Ti (1.2 < x < 1.6). The presence of oxidized titanium, probably TiO/sub 2/, was also detected near the interface. Examination of fractured samples indicates that fracture is occurring in the CaO.SiO/sub 2/ glassy phase of the ceramic very near the braze layer.
