Title: Studies of thoron and thoron progeny: Implications for transport of airborne radioactivity from soil to indoor air

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6861334

In this paper I will summarize some of the major points of our understanding of thoron and its progeny in the outdoor and indoor environments. Then I will focus on some recent work at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMIMT) that suggests that soil may be a major source of indoor thoron for few (one or two)-story housing in the United States. I will try to indicate how such studies can provide useful information for broader questions involving radon and indoor radioactivity.
