This report shows in Maine that fish species distribution and abundance are affected by lake acidity. Lakes of pH about 5.5 or above were relatively normal; lakes of pH below 5.0 were devoid of fish. Fish from acidic lakes had reduced bone strength and disturbed gill histology.
