Simple physical view of the quantum electrodynamic chiral anomaly

The quantum electrodynamic chiral anomaly allows for the possibility of inducing vacuum polarizations with low-energy external sources that do not actually create electron--positron pairs. A simple physical picture of such currents is first provided in one-space--one-time dimensions. The generalization to physical 3+1 dimensions is also presented.
