Title: Tetrasulfide extreme pressure lubricant additives

Abstract

A novel class of compounds has been prepared comprising the tetrasulfides of /sup 18/C hydrocarbons, /sup 18/C fatty acids, and /sup 18/C fatty and alkyl and triglyceride esters. These tetrasulfides are useful as extreme pressure lubricant additives and show potential as replacements for sulfurized sperm whale oil.

  • An additive for improving extreme pressure properties of lubricating oil is made by reacting sulfur monochloride with a monoolefin (e.g., Isobutene) in the presence of a promoter amount of a lower alkanol (e.g., methanol) to form an adduct, reacting the adduct with sulfur and sodium sulfide in an aqueous alkanol made at a ratio of 0.1-0.4 gram atom of sulfur per gram mole of sodium sulfide and then recovering the reaction product.
  • This patent describes an extreme pressure lubricant comprising a base and an extreme additive system comprising; (a) an organic copper compound, (b) a dithio carbamate; and (c) an organic phosphate.
  • Novel lubricant additives containing phosphorus and nitrogen and novel lubricant compositions containing between about 0.2 and 10 percent by weight of said additives are provided. The novel lubricant compositions possess improved wear-resistance and improved properties under extreme pressure.
  • Lubricant compositions containing a lubricant and a minor amount of a derivative of alkenylsuccinic anhydride are provided. Such derivatives include the reaction product of (1) the product of reaction between an alkenylsuccinic acid, ester or anhydride and a hydroxyaromatic compound; (2) the product of reaction between (1) and an amine selected from the group consisting of an alkanepolyol such as an amino alkanediol and a polyalkylene polyamine; (3) the reaction product of (2) and an aldehyde; (4) the reaction product of (3) with a metal salt capable of forming a stable complex with amines; (5) the reaction product of (2)more » with a metal salt; and (6) the product of reaction between an alkenylsuccinic acid or anhydride and an alkyl phenyl ether.« less
