Title: The influence of temperature gradients on Ostwald ripening

Abstract

Numerical simulations are used to study particle coarsening in the presence of a small linear temperature gradient in a system containing 10 and 20% volume fractions of coarsening phase. Temperature gradients are found to have an effect on both the microstructure and the kinetics of the system undergoing coarsening. The magnitude of the effect is dependent upon the thermophysical parameters of the alloy, the magnitude of the gradient, and the initial conditions of the system. Estimates for the magnitude of the effect are given for the Pb-Sn, the Ni-Al, and the W-Ni-Fe systems.
