Extension of prompt fission neutron spectrum measurements to energies below the incident neutron energy
- Univ. of Massachusetts, Lowell, MA (United States)
As a complement to our measurements of neutron-induced fission neutron spectra (FNS) for {sup 235}U and {sup 239}Pu for energies above the incident neutron energy, we are making measurements of FNS at energies below the incident energy. These latter measurements are complicated by the fact that the accelerator produced incident neutrons are elastically and inelastically scattered from the fissile scatterer with energies in the range of the fission neutron energies. To distinguish between neutron types we have employed three fast BaF{sub 2} scintillation detectors, which trigger on fission gamma rays and form part of a coincidence circuit to isolate fission neutrons. Incident neutrons are produced by the {sup 7}Li(p,n){sup 7}Be reaction at the University of Massachusetts Lowell 5.5 MV Van de Graaff Accelerator Laboratory. Proton pulses are compressed to less than 0.5 ns using a Mobley compression buncher. The main neutron detector (MND) is a BC-501 liquid scintillator in a time-of-flight system. The work presented here consists of part of a comprehensive series of measurements of fission neutron spectra for both isotopes over the incident neutron energy range 0.5-3.5 MeV in 1.0 MeV steps.
