What's your power factor (and what are you going to do about it)

Low power factor is generally due to a large number of on-site partially-loaded induction motors and other inductive equipment that requires reactive current. Power factor improvements have cost benefits for both power plants and users. Shunt capacitors or synchronous motors are two techniques for improving power factor, but the optimum correction depends on whether there is a utility penalty charge for low power factor. Other benefits include better voltage conductors, reduced power losses, and better system capacity. Example calculations illustrate how to figure power factor and utility bill savings. (DCK)
