Title: Chemical structure and surface activity. Part 4. Adsorption of 2-alkyl-1,3-dioxolanes at water-air and aqueous solution-mercury interfaces

Journal Article · · J. Colloid Interface Sci.; (United States)

Surface properties were determined at the water-air and water-mercury interfaces of the simplest group of cyclic acetals, i.e., those alkyl 1,3-dioxolane derivatives which contain an alkyl substituent at the C-2 carbon atom of the 5-membered 1,3-dioxacylclane ring. These compounds were obtained in the reaction of straight-chain 1-6 carbon aliphatic aldehydes with ethylene glycol. The data was compared with the respective properties of aliphatic alcohols, 1,2-diols, and alkyl monoethers of ethylene glycol having the same length of alkyl chains. 25 references.
