One side effect of nuclear technology is possible actinide element dispersal, which has raised concerns about low-level nuclear contamination of humans. The synthesis of a macrotricyclic tetraterephthalmide Pu(IV) sequestering agent has been prepared by high-yield tetrapod-tetrapod cyclization. The structural characterization of the methyl-protected compound, Me[sub 8]BH(2,2)CAM, is the first example of an octadentate macrotricyclic ligand. The Ce(IV) complex of the ligand has been characterized in solution by NMR. The octadentate cage ligand H[sub 8]BH(2,2)-CAM can remove 56% of Pu(IV) in contaminated mice, while its nonmacrocyclic analogue H(2,2)-MeTAM can remove up to 77% Pu(IV). These results indicate that these tetraterephthalamide ligands are potent sequestering agents for Pu(IV). The macrocyclic ligand is found to react more slowly than the open octadentate ligand; this may explain the relatively poor efficacy of H[sub 8]BH(2,2)CAM.
