Solid solutions Sr{sub 2{minus}x}La{sub x}FeO{sub 4{minus}{delta}} ( 0 {le} x {le} 0.5) with the K{sub 2}NiF{sub 4}-type structure have been prepared, and their magnetic susceptibilities have been measured in the temperature range between 4.2 and 300 K. Substitution of the La ion for the Sr site considerably weakens the antiferromagnetic transition of Sr{sub 2}FeO{sub 4}, and it finally disappears in Sr{sub 1.6}La{sub 0.4}FeO{sub 4{minus}{delta}}. Below the magnetic transition temperatures, magnetic susceptibilities measured under zero-field cooled and field cooled conditions indicate the formation of a spin-glass state. Moessbauer spectra for Sr{sub 1.9}La{sub 0.1}FeO{sub 4{minus}{delta}} at room temperature and at 9 K have been measured, and the spectra at 9 K show the presence of magnetic hyperfine interaction of Fe{sup 4+} ions; there is no charge disproportionation of Fe{sup 4+} {r_arrow} Fe{sup 3+} + Fe{sup 5+}, even below the magnetic transition temperature.
