Title: Characterization of weapons-legacy Pu-contaminated waste for disposal at WIPP

Abstract

Department of Energy (DOE) weapons program legacy transuranic (TRU) waste stored at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) is scheduled for shipment and disposal in the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) facility beginning in 1999. The Radioactive Waste Management Complex (RWMC) located within the INEEL contains facilities and equipment to manage low-level, mixed, and TRU solid radioactive waste generated by the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory and other DOE laboratories and operations. The mission of the RWMC with respect to the nuclear weapons legacy waste is the safe temporary storage and characterization of mixed and TRU waste. Much of this waste will be retrieved, nondestructively examined, and shipped to a centralized DOE disposal facility, such as the WIPP facility in New Mexico. The authors provide an overview of the TRU waste nondestructive assay and examination characterization activities at the INEEL. The TRU waste characterization and certification is a critical path for the start of shipment of TRU waste out of the state of Idaho in accordance with the DOE and State of Idaho Settlement Agreement.
