Title: Analysis of the decay [ital K][sub [ital L]][r arrow][pi][sup 0][gamma][gamma] and expectations for the decays [ital K][sub [ital L]][r arrow][pi][sup 0][ital e+][ital e[minus]] and [ital K][sub [ital L]][r arrow][pi][sup 0][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]]

Abstract

A two-component model of the decay [ital K][sub [ital L]][r arrow][pi][sup 0][gamma][gamma], in which the amplitude is the sum of a pion-loop contribution and a vector-meson-mediated term, is compared with data from the NA31 and E731 experiments. An estimate is obtained for the parameter [ital G] characterizing the strength of the vector-meson component. The amplitude of [ital K][sub [ital L]][r arrow][pi][sup 0][gamma][gamma], determined in this way, is used to calculate the [ital CP]-conserving amplitude of the decays [ital K][sub [ital L]][r arrow][pi][sup 0][ital e+][ital e[minus]] and [ital K][sub [ital L]][r arrow][pi][sup 0][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]], without neglect of lepton masses. This complex amplitude (containing both absorptive and dispersive parts) is allowed to interfere with the [ital CP]-violating amplitude expected from the short-distance interaction [ital s[bar d]][r arrow][ital l][sup +][ital l[minus]] and from the [ital CP] impurity of the [ital K][sub [ital L]] wave function. Results are obtained for the branching ratios of [ital K][sub [ital L]][r arrow][pi][sup 0][ital l+][ital l[minus]] and for the [ital CP]-violating [ital l][sup +][ital l[minus]] asymmetry in the Dalitz plot.
