Title: Sintering of Ni/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalysts in H/sub 2//H/sub 2/O atmospheres effects on methanation activity, BET area, and nickel metal area. [Alumina-supported Ni, Ni--Ru, Ni--Rh, and NiMoO/sub 3/ catalysts]

Thermal degradation of nickel catalysts is a problem in several high temperature catalytic processes such as steam reforming and methanation of coal synthesis gas. Thermal deactivation of supported nickel may result from (a) sintering (i.e., loss of support and metal area), and (b) phase transformations such as the formation of nickel aluminate. The present study was undertaken to obtain rates and activation energies for sintering of alumina-supported Ni, Ni-Ru, Ni-Rh, and NiMoO/sub 3/ catalysts in H/sub 2/ and H/sub 2/O/H/sub 2/ atmospheres typical of methanation conditions. The effects of sintering on methanation activity are also under investigation. This preliminary paper examines the effects of high temperatures on BET area and metal dispersion for alumina-supported nickel in H/sub 2/ and H/sub 2/O/H/sub 2/ atomspheres. The effects of calcining the support prior to catalyst preparation are also examined.
