Boston Edison shows how to boost heat rates of aging, oil-fired units
Boston Edison has raised its efficiency ranking from 29th to one of the top ten utilities since 1972 with a program to improve fossil boiler heat rate. To do this, the utility upgraded three of its six aging oil-fired units and stressed periodic chemical cleaning. By instilling a competitive spirit among operators and engineers, operators are encouraged to request maintenance at the first sign of heat rate deterioration. Computerized monitoring of plant heat rate performance is designed to keep everyone informed. The computer displays the results of 50 data points so that corrections can be made. A monthly report makes it possible to identify more complex problems and calculate the cost effectiveness of repairs. 2 figures. (DCK)
