Approach to the control of potential biological hazards through a peer review process
Protection of personnel against hazardous biological agents during their use in research is discussed. The peer review process outlined in this paper has been in use at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for better than ten years. It has enjoyed excellent acceptance among the research staff and has contributed significantly to collaborative and co-operative undertakings between the Health Division (medical and industrial hygiene groups) and research divisions, primarily the Biology Division. However, the ultimate proof of the value of any employee health or safety program is whether or not it accomplishes its intended purpose. The absence of laboratory-acquired infections among ORNL employees, we believe, speaks well to this point.
