The travelers attended the First US-Japan Symposium on Advances in Welding Metallurgy and presented three invited papers. The conference consisted of 16 invited papers and covered a wide range of topics that are of interest to ORNL, including HSLA steels, stainless steels, and Al--Li alloys. Following the conference, the travelers visited several research laboratories in Japan and discussed common research interests, including intermetallic alloys, modeling of weld microstructural development, and microstructural aspects of single crystal welding.
