Title: Interactions between acrylamide-acrylic acid copolymers and aluminum ions in aqueous solutions

Conference · · Am. Chem. Soc., Div. Pet. Chem., Prepr.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6719971

The interaction of polyvalent cations with polyions is well known to strongly alter the rheological properties of hydrolyzed polyacrylamide used in the tertiary oil recovery process. The influences of divalent cations have already been studied but the role played by the presence of small quantities of aluminum ions has never been investigated. In a first part of this paper, the authors discuss results of a /sup 27/Al NMR study of the binding of Al ions on acrylic acid - acrylamide electrostatic model. The second part deals with the phase diagrams, physical gelation and precipitation phenomenon, for different copolymer compositions and under various conditions of concentrations and pH.
