Title: Force analysis of reaction jack application during process tube upsetting process

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6698328

One of the problems associated with the process tube upsetting work is to prevent damage to the rear hardware when the load required for upsetting (38,000 pounds) is applied to the front nozzle. The potential problem with the rear hardware is not with the roll-joint which has been tested in tension to 180,000 pounds, nor with the four /sup 5///sub 8/ x 11 UNC cap screws which have a combined strength in excess of 100,000 pounds. The potential problem is that if the skin plate should buckle out sufficiently, it could possibly pull off the stretched crate sleeve. The roll joint between the skin and the crate sleeve was tested prior to construction and demonstrated a minimum failure of 20,060 pounds. The potential damage is prevented by use of a reaction jack on the rear nozzles which distribute the load on the rear, and via adjacent process tubes, ties it back to the upsetting press on the front face.
