Method for determining the position and rate of advance of a displacement front in a secondary recovery system for producing petroleum
This is a method and apparatus for determining the location and rate of advance of a displacement front in a secondary recovery operation. A sonic wave is originated at either a production well or the injection well and is transmitted through the formation to a listening station located in one of the wells located on the opposite side of the moving displacement front. The sonic wave undergoes a change in its velocity as it passes the displacement front. The sonic wave may also be originated at one of the wells and transmitted in the direction of the displacement front. The wave, upon contacting the interface at the displacement front, is reflected back to the well of its origin and is there received by sound- receiving apparatus. The time required for the wave to contact the interface and be reflected back to the receiver is a measure of the distance of the displacement front from the transmitting well. (3 claims)
