Producing oil from an oil-bearing stratum having high directional permeability
This is a fluid-drive process for use in an oil-bearing stratum which has high directional permeability. A central well is surrounded by a ring of at least 4 wells. Air is injected into a pair of these ring wells which are diametrically opposite each other and in line with the directional permeability. Fluids are produced through the central well until air is being produced at a rate sufficient to sustain in situ combustion. Ignition is effected around the center well, and air injection is continued through the injection wells as well as through the center well. After the combustion zone has moved into the stratum nearly to the injection wells, the central well is closed and production wells on each side of the line running through the injection wells are opened to production. Injection of air through the injection wells is continued but at a reduced rate of about 20 cu ft per sq ft of cross section of stratum. (12 claims)
