Title: Low-rank coal technology: lignite and subbituminous

Book ·
OSTI ID:6690342

A comprehensive review is presented of low-rank coal technology and an overview of findings and/or recommendations on the occurrence and properties of low-rank coals (subbituminous coal and lignite), existing and potential markets and economics, regulatory and environmental issues, and suggested Research, Development and Demonstration projects. The production and use of low-rank coals for electric power generation has increased tenfold in the last decade, and now totals over 150 million tons per year. Successful establishment of a synthetic fuels industry along with continued growth in power production could push the use of low-rank coal to 1 billion tons per year by the year 2000. Low-rank coal deposits are distinguished from bituminous coal by lower heating value, higher moisture content, physical properties, generally lower sulfur content and a predominance of alkaline rather than acidic ash components. These and other properties of low-rank coal affect the technologies for their extraction, preparation, direct use, and conversion, and justify a separate focus on low-rank coals in national R and D efforts. Part 1 of the book contains a brief resource characterization plus summaries of regulatory constraints, environmental factors and considerations, market analysis, and research and development evaluations for low-rank coal. Part II is a thorough technology evaluation covering extraction; transportation; preparation; handling, and storage; and processing and utilization. (DP)
