Title: Thermodynamic analysis of a high efficiency industrial furnace system

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6688912

A thermodynamic analysis of the heat available in the different stages of a gas-fired metal-hardening and tempering process pinpointed the sources of inefficiency, particularly in the heat lost in the flue gases, quench-tank water, and hot metal products. Engineers used these results to design a high-efficiency process that recovers the waste heat to preheat the metal, heat the furnace, and warm the metal washwater. Because the thermodynamic effectiveness of the overall process was thus raised from 11% to about 20%, an integrated heat-treating furnace actually built to this design delivers a fuel saving of 45%.
