Self-absorption coefficients for monoenergetic unidirectional gamma radiation from cylindrical sources

This paper presents results of theoretical and experimental research on the self-absorption coefficients for monoenergetic radiation from the side surfaces of a cylindrical gamma source in conjunction with a slit collimator. The self-absorption coefficients are represented as the ratio of the flux of gamma quanta emitted in one direction, taking into account absorption in the source material, to the analogous flux without absorption. The mathematical results are compared to measurements made for cesium 137 and cobalt gamma sources and are found to show good agreement.
