Downhole vertical slotting tool
A tool is provided for making vertical slots in the sidewalls of either cased or uncased wells. The tool consists of a housing which may be lowered into a well by wire line. This housing has an elongated, longitudinally extending opening in the wall and a motor within the housing. The motor is supplied with power to an electrical cable. A cutter is mounted for movement in a vertical plane and is mechanically coupled to a motor so as to be driven by it. The cutter may be moved longitudinally of the housing. It may also be moved transversely of the housing to cause it to project through the opening and into cutting relation with the side wall of the well at the first part of the longitudinal movement. Then it may be moved longitudinally of the housing while projecting through the opening, thus cutting a vertical slot in the sidewall. Finally, it may be retracted into the housing at the latter portion of such longitudinal movement.
