Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), under the sponsorship of the US Department of Energy, has been performing independent safety evaluations for the Savannah River National Laboratory's (SNL's) K Reactor. The structure of the K Reactor core is quite different from that of commercial reactors, and few codes developed for commercial reactors have the capabilities required for analysis of the K Reactor. The HELIOS lattice-physics code has been developed by Scandpower to perform collision-probability transport-theory calculations for very nearly arbitrary geometries. This paper summarizes results from a set of four test cases that were designed to mimic the structure of fuel assembly cells and supercells for the K Reactor. Results from HELIOS for the four test cases were compared to results from the MCNP Monte Carlo code. The MCNP results were taken as the reference since they were obtained from continuous energy Monte Carlo calculations using cross-section libraries derived from ENDF/B-V. The MCNP calculations were performed at LANL, while the HELIOS calculations were performed by Scandpower.
