Preliminary evaluation of the use of hydraulic air compressors in water-compensated reservoir compressed air storage power plants. [Entrainment of air bubbles by a column of downward-flowing water]
Abstract
A new air compression system for CAES applications, based on the hydraulic compressor principle, is described and evaluated. In addition to yielding a more efficient use of energy from the base power plant, due to isothermal air compression, the hydraulic air compressor does not require the conventional intercoolers and aftercooler, and it replaces the air compressors with water pumps. Using performance characteristics predicted with an analytical model, a hydraulic compression system for a CAES plant is designed and compared with an equivalent conventional air compression system. The results indicate that the hydraulic air compressor-based CAES system would use less compression energy but would likely be more costly due to the number and size of the water shafts required.

The highlights are presented of a portion of an ongoing study program to assess the technical and economic feasibility of advanced concepts for generating peak-load electric power from a compressed air energy storage (CAES) power plant incorporating a coal-fired fluid bed combustor (FBC). Specifically, it reviews the analysis performed to select the FBC/CAES power plant system configuration for the subsequent conceptual design phase of the study. The review presents: the design and operating considerations involved with integrating an atmospheric fluid bed combustor (AFBC) or a pressurized fluid bed combustor (PFBC) with a CAES system to yield practical system configurations; themore »

Preliminary evaluation of a power plant with direct coupled compressed air energy storage
This paper will consider a steam power plant directly integrated with a CAES facility. The combined plant cycle is called the Direct Coupled Steam/Compressed Air Energy Storage (DCS/CAES) cycle. The effect of integrating a steam power plant with a CAES plant is to allow the steam power plant to operate continuously while the combined plant operates as an intermediate load or peaking load facility. 7 refs. -
Preliminary evaluation of impingement and entrainment by ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) plants
As part of the OTEC Environmental Assessment Program, the historical data from the candidate OTEC resource areas were examined and the effects of OTEC impingement and entrainment were assessed. The results of these investigations are presented. Suggestions to complete the OTEC site characterization are given when the available information is insufficient to assess the effects of an OTEC plant. -
Biological evaluation of devices used for reducing entrainment and impingement losses at thermal power plants
A preliminary survey of fish protection devices either in use or proposed for water intake structures was conducted for the purpose of assessing their potential for reducing impingement and entrainment. All the designs examined can be divided into two basic categories: behavioral screening systems and physical screening systems. The behavioral screening devices rely upon the ability of fish to sense artificial stimuli and respond by swimming away from hazardous areas. These systems are of little or no value in protecting planktonic fish eggs, larvae, and disoriented, heat-shocked, or lethargic adult fishes. Many of the physical screening devices, on the othermore » -
Performance of a hydraulic air compressor for use in compressed air energy storage power systems
A fluid mechanical analysis of a hydraulic air compression system for Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) application is presented. With this compression concept, air is charged into an underground reservoir, for later use in power generation, by entraining bubbles into a downward flow of water from a surface reservoir. Upon releasing the air in the underground reservoir, the water is pumped back to the surface. The analytical model delineated is used to predict the hydraulic compressor performance characteristics (pumping power, pump head, compression efficiency) as a function of water flow rate and system geometrical parameters. The results indicate that, althoughmore »
