A system for evaluation and control of materials with unknown toxicity
Technical Report

Industrial hygienists, occupational health physicians, and industry management have an ethical, if not legal, responsibility to protect workers exposed to materials for which safe exposure limits have not yet been established. This requires a systematic method of obtaining available toxicological data and translating that information into meaningful controls that be implemented without unwarranted cost. Some practical approaches currently used at LLNL to deal with these problems are presented, along with their justifications and shortcomings. The concept of ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) is discussed in this context. 9 refs., 1 fig., 3 tabs.
