Title: Chemical properties of einsteinium. Part II

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6644880

The history and some of the equipment used to study the chemistry of Es are reviewed. The absorption spectra of Es/sup 3 +/ and the diffraction characterization of Es compounds are discussed. Evidence suggests that Es is a divalent metal whose mp is 860 +- 30/sup 0/C. Characterization of Es compounds is now chiefly by absorption spectrophotometry. The spectra of Es/sup 3 +/ and Es/sup 2 +/ in LaCl/sub 3/ are compared. It is concluded that the chemistry of Es has been characterized in three oxidation states O (metallic state), + 2, and +3, with O being the least studied. (17 figures, 2 tables, 13 references).
