Title: US heat pump research and development projects, 1976-1986

Abstract

This document, which is an updated version of US Heat Pump Research and Development Projects, published in August 1982 by the US Department of Energy, is a compilation of one-page summaries and publication and patent information for 233 individual research and development projects on heat pumps covering the years 1976 through 1986. The majority of the projects refer to heat pumps in space-conditioning applications. The document is intended to include information on all projects in the United States for which results are publicly available. Ten different indexes are included to aid the reader in locating specific projects.

  • This report is a compilation of 153 research project summary forms which provide descriptive data about individual R and D projects. Projects sponsored by DOE, EPRI, GRI and others are included for all the applications mentioned above. The document is intended to include all heat pump projects for which results are publicly available.
  • This catalogue of projects is a compilation of the heat pump projects being carried out with governmental grants and/or loans. Only projects which are involved in research work are listed: heat pump installations subsidized in some way, for general energy conservation rather than research, are not included.
  • This Phase I report is an important initial step in the long-range planning process necessary to assure the orderly and economic development of Utah's fossil-fuel resources. Basic purposes of this program are: to provide information pertinent to the development of energy resources; to improve the technology and economics of resource recovery; to identify the industrial chemical potential of resources; to explore other commercial uses of resources. To achieve these objectives, five research projects were initiated: investigation of tar sands as a potential source of asphalts and petrochemicals; solution mining of coal; feasibility of solvent extraction of bitumen from oil shale;more » study of the combustion process in oil shale beds; and study of the chemical values of oil shale recoverable by rapid pyrolysis. The following key conclusions were determined: asphalt from the Utah tar sands bitumen is of high quality and appears to be competitive; the unexpectedly high permeability determined for Utah coals enhances the feasibility of using the solution-mining process; Utah oil shales have been found to be high in solvent-soluble compounds, thus increasing their potential commercial value; concepts important to the rapid pyrolysis of oil shale have been demonstrated as valid; and a significant data base has been produced.« less
  • The 1986 status report presents information on current and proposed activities in the GRI Transport and Storage Research Subprogram, a part of GRI's Gas Operations Research and Development Program. A common theme across project areas in the subprogram is the maintenance and enhancement of the nation's gas distribution, storage, and transmission network that links gas-supply sources to the end-user. These project areas are construction and maintenance, metering and distribution operations, plastic piping materials evaluation, residential/commercial interior piping systems, gas storage technology, metal transmission and distribution piping systems, and advanced transport systems. The status report presents descriptions of the major issues, more » objectives, initiatives, and strategies of the subprogram. Also included are contract summary reports for each research project in the seven project areas.« less
  • Citations in this retrospective bibliography cover research and development progress of the government sponsored Fossil Energy Program. Various aspects of the Program are considered, including the technical, environmental, economic, and commercial ones. (Contains 60 citations fully indexed and including a title list.)
