Abstract

The use of super-Gaussian functions as both low-pass and band-pass frequency domain filters is demonstrated. Two simple formulas are derived which yield the coefficients of a nonrecursive digital algorithm that give a very good approximation to these filters in the time domain. 10 figures, 4 tables.

New design and implementation techniques for two-dimensional (2-D) digital filters are presented. These techniques are characterized by their applicability to a large number of practical problems of current interest in 2-D signal processing. After a brief review of 2-D digital signal processing formalisms, the problem of implementing 2-D nonrecursive filters is investigated. In particular, the sectioning approach to filter implementation is analyzed with emphasis on minimizing the total computation required. An optimal sectioning procedure is formulated, and examples are given which show that sectioning can be significantly superior to other common implementations for a large class of filtering problems. Why filter recursively in two dimensions

The relative advantages of 2-D recursive digital filters over their nonrecursive counterparts are discussed. A design example illustrates the ability of 2-D recursive filters to yield excellent responses with far fewer coefficients than nonrecursive filters require. This difficulty is seen to be partially overcome by using nonrecursive filters with very efficient implementations. 3 figures, 1 table.

A low-pass, nonrecursive digital filter was designed to process data in an automated enzyme immunoassay system. The software implemented filter was installed in the Intel 80/10 system controller. A low-speed sample rate of three samples per second allowed the filter algorithm to be programmed in the high-level FORTRAN language with a resultant execution speed of 0.6 seconds per data array. Fourier techniques are used to derive a zero phase shift filter algorithm from a frequency domain prototype. Nonrecursive Wiener filter design

This is a tutorial report on the design of nonrecursive filters using the least-mean-squared (LMS) error criterion. A version of Levinson's algorithm for solving the LMS equations is described. The emphasis is on applying LMS-design theory to cases such as system identification, noise cancellation, prediction, inverse filtering, and deconvolution. Examples are included. 8 figures.
