Mercaptans as corrosion inhibitors in acidic media

In the present investigation, an attempt has been made to study the inhibitory action of propyl mercaptan, butyl mercaptan, and lauryl mercaptan toward 3S aluminum in 0.1N trichloroacetic acid and 0.5N hydrochloric acid solutions. In 0.1N trichloroacetic acid solution, butyl mercaptan, propyl mercaptan and lauryl mercaptan afforded excellent inhibition, even at their lowest concentrations. Lauryl mercaptan gave only 35% protection in 0.5N hydrochloric acid. Its inhibitive power increased with increases in the concentration. Similar behavior was observed with propyl mercaptan and with butyl mercaptan. (19 refs.)
