Lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO[sub 3]) has recently become of interest to the superconductor community as a substrate material for growing epitaxial films of YBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7] (YBCO). LaAlO[sub 3] has a rhombohedral crystal structure at room temperature and undergoes a transformation to a cubic structure at high temperature. The phase transformation on cooling leads to the formation of twins. This twinning may cause problems in using LaAlO[sub 3] as a substrate. This paper details in-situ observations in the electron microscope of twinning in LaAlO[sub 3] crystals cycled from room temperature to [approximately] 875 C and back.
